On 14 March 2019, Public Hearing around TB was held at Azerbaijan Parliament with participation of Azerbaijan TB NGO Coalition. The event was organized by Parliament with collaboration of WHO country office. During the public hearing, TB related stigma and discrimination problem was highlighted by Hande Harmanci, WHO country representative, who told quite kind personal story about TB stigma.
MP Ganira Pashayeva said that increasing knowledge level on TB is very necessary issue for the poor rural regions. She called the governmental bodies to support NGOs in their TB related advocacy and awareness campaigns.
Elchin Mukhtarli, Head of Coalition highlighted that TB is a social trouble, which devastates many families and the Coalition many times witnessed it. He stressed that the transport fee for DR TB patients has been stopped already 1 year, and this activity has not been supported by the government yet. People with TB are facing with barriers in getting social allowance.These social obstacles influence treatment adherence and the patients are demotivated. He suggested to increase involvement of NGOs in TB response and improve patient support services for key populations
